Many people, including golden-nosed experts, do. A splash can lift the aroma, breaking up what your chemistry teacher called ester chains and freeing up volatile compounds. But you paid how much for that single malt? Why sully it with chlorinated tap water?

Enter the Mavea. Filter jugs have been around for 40 years, pioneered by the Brita company of Germany. In 2000, Brita sold the brand in North and South America to Clorox. Now the same German firm is launching a fresh competitive assault on the market here with a new-generation pitcher. More stylish than Brita jugs, it reduces all the bad stuff, including chlorine and heavy metals, just like other pitchers.

That makes the water not only cleaner but taste softer, like the Scottish water used to make great whisky. And it features a proprietary filter with a micro screen to reduce black-particle release, an unsightly disadvantage with other filters. Your dram will look as pure as it tastes. Mavea Elemaris pitchers are available in black, white and red and in two sizes, five-glass and nine-glass, $34.99 and $39.99. Sold at Pepper Mill in Toronto and other kitchenware stores across the country.

Beppi Crosariol

www.theglobeandmail.com

DOST rolls out locally-developed water filter technology

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the National Housing Authority (NHA) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) recently in Muntinlupa City for the pilot testing of a new water filter technology developed by the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) of DOST.

DOST's locally-developed water purification system consists of a clay ceramic filter coated with nano-colloidal silver, an anti-microbial agent that replaces the chlorination process in traditional water filter systems. PHOTO CREDIT: Jane Tadili

Both parties agreed to collaborate in the field and performance testing of the system on the chosen beneficiaries identified by NHA. ITDI-DOST experts will provide the consultancy and technical assistance to NHA and the beneficiaries during the installation, demonstration and quality monitoring of the system.

Through the project “Production and Performance Testing of Ceramic Pot-typed Water Filter", DOST-ITDI aims to develop an efficient, stable, low cost and easy to use water purification system that can improve the quality of drinking water particularly in areas where access to potable water is difficult.

Addressing the Southville 3 residents in Muntilupa, the first beneficiaries of the water system, DOST Secretary Mario Montejo explained that the project is inline with DOST’s thrust to make local technology works for the people and to provide some solutions to the problems of the country today. “Access to potable water is one of the major development concerns of President Aquino. What we brought here today is a practical solution to that concern. We really hope that we can roll this out to other communities nationwide," Montejo added.

The water purification system (WPS) is a simple technology that consists of a container and filtering medium, which is the ceramic pot filter (CPF). The ceramic filter is made up of red clay which is coated with nano-colloidal silver as the anti-microbial agent that replaces the chlorination process in traditional water filter systems. The ceramic pot typically sits or hangs on the top of a large plastic container, which is fitted with a tap at the bottom. A lid is placed on top of the filter to prevent contamination.

According to ITDI scientists that developed the technology, the system is capable to purify tap water, deep well water, and raw water tainted with up to 3 % suspended particles or silt and convert these into safe drinking water. ITDI experts further said that the water filter has passed the Philippine National Standards (PNS) for drinking water in terms of microbiological and chemical analysis.

ITDI Director Nuna Almanzor said that cost per unit was considered in the development of the water filter. Almanzor said that the ceramic filter is “easy to make, portable, inexpensive, user friendly, and made of local clay that passed the required physical properties of ceramic pot filters". Almanzor added that the project will not just address access to safe potable drinking water but will also provide jobs to pottery makers in the country. She said that DOST is willing to train possible manufacturers of the ceramic filters to provide additional jobs for Filipinos.

While ITDI is waiting for feedbacks from the pilot test for the possible improvement and cutting down of production costs, the agency will fabricate the CPF units to roll out to other NHA identified beneficiaries. ITDI says, at present, the units are easy to install, handle, maintain and reasonably priced.

NHA General Manager, Atty. Chito Cruz, said that NHA is very honored to work with DOST for the project. Cruz said that, apart from electricity, safe and potable drinking water has been a problem to resettlement areas due to its unavailability or contamination. But with the ceramic filter technology, Cruz said that residents will have not just water but purified drinking water at a minimal cost. “It is very laudable for DOST to undertake this project, to make water purifier affordable, potable and portable to our people," said Cruz. — TJD, GMA News

www.gmanetwork.com

Water filter plan aims to generate carbon credits

By Francois Ausseill / AFP, KAKAMEGA, KENYA

A man filters water using a LifeStraw device at his house in Shituhumi village in Kenya’s Western Province on May 30.

To protect the environment and improve the health of 4 million people while making a profit is the goal of a Swiss-based company distributing water filters and aiming to sell carbon credits.

Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen’s family firm has invested US$30 million in a program to distribute 900,000 water purifiers in Kenya’s Western Province, which will reduce environmental pollution by avoiding the need to burn wood and boil water.

The technology, given free to local people, is known as the LifeStraw, which is a plastic kit fitted with a filter that eliminates more than 99 percent of bacteria, viruses and parasites in water from wells and streams.

In recent months, with the help of 4,000 Kenyan public health workers, the Danish-run Vestergaard Frandsen company equipped almost 90 percent of the 900,000 households in Western Province, reaching nearly 4.5 million residents.

LESS EMISSIONS

The aim is to ensure that 60 percent of the households affected no longer have any need to boil their water to purify it and thus reduce the carbon gas emissions, earning Vestergaard Frandsen carbon credits to sell.

The scheme depends on a system of collecting information from each worker who installs a LifeStraw and must transmit, over a mobile phone, the name and photo of the recipient, the number of people in the household and the GPS coordinates of the house.

“We’re giving every house a water filter and educating in the use of [it] and the need for drinking safe water,” Vestergaard Frandsen said. “As a result of this, we anticipate that the use of boiling water will go down. When boiling water reduces, less firewood is burnt and that means less CO2 emissions.”

“It’s a massive investment for our company … We obviously need a revenue stream. That revenue comes from the reduced boiling water and the reduced burning of firewood. We actually expect to have a CO2 emission reduction for 2 [million] to 2.5 million tonnes per year, which we’re going to sell on the voluntary carbon credit market,” he added. “We’re a business, and we’ve been very fortunate to build a business around the opportunity to save lives. It’s a full profit enterprise.”

In a village on the outskirts of Kakamega, Vestergaard Frandsen carried out a swift tour of inspection, but while the project has been widely welcomed, unexpected difficulties do arise.

SUSPICIONS

Saouda Rajab, 27, took her courage in both hands to ask whether the filtered water acted as a contraceptive.

“Is it true it is used for family planning?” she asked. “Can you show me what’s inside [the plastic tube]. Old people fear that these wazungu [white people] put something in it to kill us … Those are rumors from the old people.”

Vestergaard Frandsen explained that the rumors are groundless and promised to show the filter without its plastic casing within the next two weeks. He then decided to step up his village-by-village awareness campaigns to keep on hammering the message that the LifeStraw has no such side effects and to allay fears.

The company is playing for high stakes. Its financial success depends on the widespread adoption of the kit by the villagers.

The project must also undergo an independent audit carried out by a firm with the approval of the Gold Standard, a label for trade in carbon credits under which LifeStraw is registered.

MEASURING RESULTS

The audit will “evaluate how much CO2 would have been produced in the absence of the project and then the real emissions will be measured once the project is in place,” said Emmanuel Fages, a carbon market analyst, who accepts that “measuring carbon is not an exact science.”

For his part, Vestergaard Frandsen plans to pursue his work on the ground until the audit is carried out.

“At the end of the year, we will be in a position to measure our 2011 worth in carbon credits, whose market value oscillates between six and 10 euros per tonne,” he said, before adding that he has made an advance deal worth 1.8 million tonnes with the US bank JPMorgan Chase.

www.taipeitimes.com

Eco hero: The water filter entrepreneur

By Jessica Salter

Amanda Jones, 27, set up her company, Red Button Design, with her schoolfriend James Brown, a design engineer. The pair appeared on BBC Two’s Dragons’ Den in 2007 to pitch their innovation – a mobile water filter device called Midomo, that can filter 50 litres of dirty water using the power of its wheels, intended for use in Africa – they were offered £50,000 by the dragons. (Following the programme they were offered a £45,000 grant by Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, meaning they could turn down the television investors and keep all their business for themselves.) The pair have now spent £300,000 developing the product and the sixth version is in use in communities all over sub-Saharan Africa (midomo.co.uk).

'When I left Glasgow University where I studied psychology and philosophy, I decided that I wanted to work for the UN and I started researching. I came across the Millennium Development Goals [eight international targets agreed by all UN member states, which include eradicating extreme poverty and fighting disease epidemics] and I thought that the thing that affected all of them, from child health and education to combating HIV, was water. Clinics in Africa are clogged full of people suffering from dysentery so doctors can’t treat patients with HIV; girls can’t go to school because they have to spend all day making lots of trips to collect water.

'Everyone knows water is essential to life, but the facts are astounding: 10,000 people die each day because they can’t get to clean water. Every 20 seconds a child dies from a water-related disease; 443 million school days and more than 40 billion working hours are lost to water collection annually.

'James wanted to design a product that would really stand out for his degree show, so I shared my research and he came up with the Midomo. We were clueless about business at the start – we were only 23 – and had a beautiful naivety that you never get back.

'I applied for Dragons’ Den at three one morning and then forgot about it – like when you do late-night eBay shopping. Then the researchers rang me and invited me for a screen test. I hadn’t even told James. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that 90 percent of the world’s water is contaminated in some way. There are a variety of microscopic organisms that can contaminate water supplies and cause potentially serious, even fatal, illnesses among wilderness travelers. The major danger in the backcountry from these infections is fluid loss due to diarrhea and vomiting, which can lead to hypovolemic shock and possibly death (see Diarrhea or Vomiting, page 315; Fluid Electrolyte Replacement, page 286; Shock, page 238).
In order to drink the water, you should be prepared to treat it. There are numerous methods of water purification, described below in order of effectiveness. Remember, however, that infections can also be spread through poor personal hygiene, something that purifying your water won’t prevent.
Biologically Contaminated vs. Toxic Water

Biologically contaminated water is water that contains microorganisms such as Giardia (a common microorganism that, if not killed, leads to intestinal disorders), bacteria, or viruses that can lead to infections (see Gastrointestinal Infections, page 316). Toxic water sources contain chemical contamination from pesticide runoffs, mine tailings, and so on. Boiling, filtering, or chemically treating water can remove or kill microorganisms, but it will not remove chemical toxins. This is also the case when using a solar still (see page 223).
Boiling

Boiling is the most certain way of killing all microorganisms. According to the Wilderness Medical Society, water temperatures above 160° F (70° C) kill all pathogens within 30 minutes and above 185° F (85° C) within a few minutes. So in the time it takes for the water to reach the boiling point (212° F or 100° C) from 160° F (70° C), all pathogens will be killed, even at high altitude. To be extra safe, let the water boil rapidly for one minute, especially at higher altitudes since water boils at a lower temperature (see page 68.)
Chemical Purification

There are two types of chemical treatment: those using iodine and those using chlorine. There are a variety of products on the market, so follow the directions on the bottle. Be advised that many of the tablets have an expiration date and become ineffective after that point. Also, once the bottle has been opened, the tablets must be used within a certain period. When in doubt, buy a new bottle. Remember that chemical purification methods may only be partially effective, depending on the water temperature.
General Chemical Treatment Procedures

The effectiveness of all chemical treatment of water is related to the temperature, pH level, and clarity of the water. Cloudy water often requires higher concentrations of chemical to disinfect.

If the water is cloudy or filled with large particles, strain it, using a cloth, before treatment. Large particles, if swallowed, may be purified only "on the outside."

Add the chemical to the water and swish it around to aid in dissolving. Splash some of the water with the chemical onto the lid and the threads of the water bottle so that all water areas are treated.

The water should sit for at least 30 minutes after adding the chemical to allow purification to occur. If using tablets, let the water sit for 30 minutes after the tablet has dissolved.

The colder the water, the less effective the chemical is as a purifying agent. Research has shown that at 50° F (10° C), only 90 percent of Giardia cysts were inactivated after 30 minutes of exposure. If the water temperature is below 40° F (4° C), double the treatment time before drinking. It is best if water is at least 60° F (16° C) before treating. You can place the water in the sun to warm it before treating.

Chemically treated water can be made to taste better by pouring it back and forth between containers, after it has been adequately treated. Other methods include adding a pinch of salt per quart or adding flavorings (e.g., lemonade mix, etc.) after the chemical treatment period.

Iodine Treatment

Iodine is light sensitive and must always be stored in a dark bottle. It works best if the water is over 68° F (21° C). Iodine has been shown to be more effect than chlorine-based treatments in inactivating Giardia cysts. Be aware that some people are allergic to iodine and cannot use it as a form of water purification. Persons with thyroid problems or on lithum, women over fifty, and pregnant women should consult their physician prior to using iodine for purification. Also, some people who are allergic to shellfish are also allergic to iodine. If someone cannot use iodine, use either a chlorine-based product or a non-iodine-based filter, such as the PUR Hiker Microfilter, MSR WaterWorks, or the Katadyn Water Filter.
Generally, the procedure is as follows:

Liquid 2% Tincture of Iodine Add 5 drops per quart when the water is clear. Add 10 drops per quart when the water is cloudy.

Polar Pure Iodine Crystals Fill the Polar Pure bottle with water and shake. The solution will be ready for use in one hour. Add the number of capfuls (per quart of water treated) listed on the bottle, based on the temperature of the iodine solution. The particle trap prevents crystals from getting into the water being treated. It is important to note that you are using the iodine solution to treat the water, not the iodine crystals. The concentration of iodine in a crystal is poisonous and can burn tissue or eyes. Let the treated water stand for 30 minutes before drinking. In order to destroy Giardia cysts, the drinking water must be at least 68° F (20° C). The water can be warmed in the sun before treating or hot water can be added. Refill the treatment bottle after use so that the solution will be ready one hour later. Crystals in the bottle make enough solution to treat about 2,000 quarts. Discard the bottle when empty.

Potable Aqua This is an iodine tablet product. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use.

Chlorine Treatment

Chlorine can be used for persons with iodine allergies or restrictions. Remember that water temperature, sediment level, and contact time are all elements in killing microorganisms in the water. Halazone is an example of a chlorine tablet product. To use, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Tricks of the Trail

Backups Always have at least one backup method for water purification in case one fails. This can be any combination of methods. I’m the cautious type, so I always have two backup methods: water filter and 2% tincture of iodine or Polar Pure iodine crystals. And I can always boil the water. If boiling is your backup method, make sure you have enough fuel.

Fix the Taste Adding vitamin C (about 50 milligrams) to iodized water completely eliminates any taste or color of iodine. You must wait until the iodine has purified the water before adding the vitamin C. The vitamin C in drink mixes like Tang™ has the same effect.<

Filtration

There are a number of devices on the market that filter out microorganisms. A water filter pumps water through a microscopic filter that is rated for a certain-size organism. The standard size rating is the micron (the period at the end of this sentence is about 600 microns). Depending on the micron rating of the filter, smaller organisms (like viruses) can pass through. Be cautious when selecting a filter. You should know what potential organisms you need to treat for. You don’t want to go to an area where a virus like hepatitis A is present in the water (a problem in some developing countries) with a filter that will handle only a larger organism like Giardia.
Common microorganisms and the filter size needed:

Organism
Examples
General Size
Filter Type
Particle Size Rating

Protozoa
Giardia, Cryptosporidium
5 microns or larger
Water filter
1.0–4.0 microns

Bacteria
Cholera, E. coli, Salmonella
0.2–0.5 microns
Microfilter
0.2–1.0 microns

Viruses
Hepatitis A, rotavirus, Norwalk virus
0.004 microns
Water purifier
to 0.004 microns

There are two basic types of filters (descriptions of several popular models begin on the facing page).

Membrane Filters use thin sheets with precisely sized pores that prevent objects larger than the pore size from passing through. Pro: Relatively easy to clean. Con: Clog more quickly than depth filters. Example: PUR-Hiker.

Depth Filters use thick porous materials such as carbon or ceramic to trap particles as water flows through the material. Pro: Can be partially cleaned by backwashing. Activated carbon filters also remove a range of organic chemicals and heavy metals. Con: Rough treatment can crack the filter, rendering it useless. Examples: MSR WaterWorks II, Katadyn.

Note: There is a difference between a water filter and a water purifier. Filters do not filter out viruses, but there are water purifiers, like the PUR Scout, that pass the water through both a filter and an iodine compound that kills any smaller organisms that have passed through the filter. These purifiers kill all microorganisms down to 0.004 microns; however, the filter should not be used by people who are allergic to iodine.
Common Practices for Using a Water Filter

Filter the cleanest water you can find. Dirty water or water with large suspended particles will clog your filter more quickly.

Prefilter the water either through a prefilter on the pump or strain it through a bandanna.

If you must filter dirty water, let it stand overnight for particles to settle out.

Big Berkey gravity-fed water filters are a top pick for clean water and long-term preparedness

The water filtration market is saturated with products that claim to provide clean drinking water. While all of them work to one degree or another, some can be complicated to install and maintain. And some are downright expensive on a per-gallon basis, too. The more popular faucet filters, for example, only filter a hundred gallons of water (or so) before requiring replacement. Personally, I like to have water filters that can handle several thousand gallons of water at a very low effective cost per gallon. I also like gravity-fed water filters for several important reasons: They require no electricity to use -- meaning they'll work even when the lights go out -- and there are no complicated motors or pumps to wear out or replace. They're also light and fairly portable, making them a natural choice for anyone interested in short-term storm preparedness or even long-term "end of the world" preparedness scenarios. I've used several gravity-fed water filters, and I've come to really like the Big Berkey system the best. As far as simple, reliable water purification on your countertop, it doesn't get any better than Berkey water systems.

How the Big Berkey works

With a Berkey water filter, you simply put the water into the top chamber and gravity pulls it through the media filters that capture bacteria, parasites, herbicides, pesticides, solvents, nitrates, nitrites, lead, mercury, chlorine, VOCs, and even fluoride. You can run practically any type of water through the unit and get fresh, pure drinking water as a result. (Of course, really dirty water will clog the filters more quickly, requiring more frequent cleaning of the filters, but that's true with any filtration system.)

I personally use the "Big Berkey System" which is made out of stainless steel, and I love it! I used it for many months in Ecuador without a single problem, and it is still a personal favorite that I highly recommend. The water always comes out clean, no matter how dirty it is when you initially pour it into the holding container at the top. My favorite feature on the Big Berkey System is the stainless steel water container. Many other brands of water filters are made out of polycarbonate and plastic components that may leach harmful chemicals into the water (Berkey does sell a co-polyester variety, but guarantees that it's BPA free). Another cool feature of the system is that it requires no pumps or effort to function. Gravity literally does all the work for you. Yes, it takes some time for the gravity filter to produce water, but by filling the top container, the effective water pressure provided by gravity is more than enough to produce sufficient drinking water each day for a typical family.

The stainless steel aspect of the Berkey water filters is also a huge plus. I've used other hand-held filters that ran the water through a hose, and it seems like the water always comes out tasting a bit like the hose. But with the Big Berkey, there's no "hose" taste because there's no hose! The water tastes clean and clear, with no "surgical" aftertaste.

If you don't already have a gravity-powered water filter, I recommend one for every household that's interested in preparedness. As long as you have access to some source of water, this water filter can get you through a storm, a blackout or even a period of social unrest. When the municipal plumbing fails, Big Berkey keeps you hydrated with clean, bacteria-free water. That's worth its weight in gold, in my opinion.

Where to get Big Berkey water filters

Here's the source for Big Berkey water filters that I'm familiar with and recommend. You'll get excellent customer service with these folks along with very competitive pricing, too. (They also carry some other large-scale water storage devices such as the Aquatank.) Got a family member who doesn't believe in preparedness? Give them a Big Berkey and call it a Christmas present. One day when they need it, they'll realize you actually gave them the gift of clean water during an emergency, and that's perhaps one of the best gifts you can ever give anyone.

-naturalnews-
Water Filter

GE Smart Water MWF Refrigerator Water Filter, 1-Pack

Water Filter
BUY NOW
by General Electric

Size Name:
1-Pack: $32.992-Pack: $62.743 Pack: $94.954-Pack: $132.156-Pack: $192.00

List Price:
$62.12

Price:
$32.99 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping. Details

You Save:
$29.13 (47%)

In Stock.
Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. B0009VKJCY

Product Description

This counter top unit sits on the counter and easily connects to most any kitchen faucet. A diverter valve replaces the aerator on your faucet. In the regular position, water exits straight through its own aerator. When filtered water is desired, turn on the cold water and pull out on the diverter valve knob - water is routed through the filter and out its own swivel spout. Uses a replaceable carbon block cartridge (included), in a single space-saving housing. This cartridge is manufactured using a patented process that yields a cartridge with a nominal 10 micron filtration rating, high dirt-holding capacity. A high porosity design helps prevent the cartridge from plugging before its adsorption capacity is exhausted, maximizing the utilization of the carbon while maintaining low pressure drop, 6,000 gallons chlorine taste & odor reduction. Flow rate is .75 to 1 gallon per minute. For cold water use only, includes two diverter adapters, spout, chrome diverter valve. Includes chlorine test strips to verify when it's time to replace cartridge.
Water Filter
BUY NOW

Crystal Quest 7 stage Double Undersink Water Filter (provides 20,000 gal)

by Crystal Quest

Water Filter
Price:
$123.00

BUY NOW
In Stock.
Ships from and sold by Healthy Air and Water Products.

3 new from $123.00
Product Specifications
Part Number:
CQE-US-00307

Technical Details

7 stages of filtration

Installs neatly under the sink. Filters cleanse water to various extents for irrigation, drinking water, aquariums, and swimming pools.

Methods of filtration

Filters use sieving, adsorption, ion exchanges and other processes. Unlike a sieve or screen, a filter can remove particles much smaller than the holes through which the water passes.

Types of filters

Water treatment plant filters

Types of water filters media filters, screen filters, disk filters, slow sand filter beds, rapid sand filters and cloth filters.

Point-of-use filters

Point-of-use filters for home use include granular-activated carbon filters (GAC) used for carbon filtering, metallic alloy filters, microporous ceramic filters, carbon block resin (CBR) and ultrafiltration membranes. Some filters use more than one filtration method. An example of this is a multi-barrier system. Jug filters can be used for small quantities of drinking water. Some kettles have built-in filters, primarily to reduce limescale buildup.

Portable water filters

Main article: Portable water purification

Water filters are used by hikers, by aid organizations during humanitarian emergencies, and by the military. These filters are usually small, portable and light (1-2 pounds/0.5-1.0 kg or less), and usually filter water by working a mechanical hand pump, although some use a siphon drip system to force water through while others are built into water bottles. Dirty water is pumped via a screen-filtered flexible silicon tube through a specialized filter, ending up in a container. These filters work to remove bacteria, protozoa and microbial cysts that can cause disease. Filters may have fine meshes that must be replaced or cleaned, and ceramic water filters must have their outside abraded when they have become clogged with impurities.

These water filters should not be confused with devices or tablets that are water purifiers, some of which remove or kill viruses such as hepatitis A and rotavirus.

Water polishing

The term water polishing can refer to any process that removes small (usually microscopic) unwanted material from a portion of water. The process and its meaning vary from setting to setting: a manufacturer of aquarium filters may claim that its filters perform water polishing by capturing "micro particles" within nylon or polyester pads just as a chemical engineer can use the term to refer to the removal of magnetic resins from a solution by passing the solution over a bed of magnetic particulate. In this sense, water polishing is simply another term for water filtration.

-wikipedia-
